Jarocho music from the gulf state of Veracruz is often referred to as the 'blues music' of Mexico. The son's simple chord structures and melodies are immediately accessible while the open-ended spirit of the son provides an unlimited base for improvisation and displays of individual mastery of the instruments, voice and dance. Famous sones from the region such as La Bamba, El Cascabel, and El Colas resonate among Mexican and Chicano musicians alike and have inspired interpretation by artists as wide ranging as Los Lobos, Cafetacuba, and Mariachi Sol de Mexico. Students in this eight week, beginners workshop will learn to play the jarana (a guitar-like instrument), pandero, quihada or requinto, and/or dance and sing estilo Veracruzano.
The workshop will be led Sergio Gutierrez, Beatriz Gutierrez, Chris Gonzalez Clarke and other members of the San Jose-based group, SanJoSon.
